Scholarship Programme

 

The Hong Leong Group Malaysia, through Hong Leong Foundation, has long been committed to a policy of social responsibility by contributing towards the welfare of the society.

The Hong Leong Foundation Scholarship Programme is aimed towards helping young and deserving Malaysians who have achieved excellent academic results to attain their goals and be successful in life. Besides financial assistance, the programme provides industrial training at relevant group subsidiary companies to help students develop professionally and personally to help graduates reach their full potential.

 

Applications for the Hong Leong Foundation 2008 Scholarship Programme have now closed.

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified (sometime around May 2008).

Q: When will application be open again?

About Programmes Offered & Eligibility

Q:  What are the courses/fields of study offered?
A:  The scholarships are awarded to students pursuing courses in Accounting / Finance & Management, Law, Business Administration, Science / Applied Science, Actuarial Science, Engineering (all fields), Mass Communication, Hotel Management, IT, Computer Science & Creative Multimedia.

Q:  What are the academic requirements for sponsorship?
A: 

SPM : at least 5As and 2 passes from a minimum of 7 subjects.
STPM : at least 3As and a pass in the General Paper.
CGPA : at least 3.5 for Diploma or Matriculation

About Sponsorship & Contractual Obligation

Q:  Who can apply?
A:  It is open to Malaysian citizens aged between 17 – 25 years, who have sat for the SPM/STPM/diploma/matriculation examination in 2007.

Q:  I am on my second (or third or fourth year) now and would like to apply for scholarship?  What do I do?
A:  The scholarship is only open to students who are about to enter their first year at recognised IPTA universities, Kolej Tunku Abdul Rahman, Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology, Taylor's College, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Limkokwing University College of Creative Technology, Monash University (Malaysia Campus) and Multimedia University.

Q: I have just gotten my SPM results, which category should I apply for?
A: You may apply for the Diploma category which awards RM5,000 a year according to the list of courses and institutions in the Application Form. Hong Leong Foundation does not provide financial assistance for A-levels, Foundation or Matriculation studies.

Q: I am currently doing my Foundation year. Can I apply for the scholarship?
A: No, Hong Leong Foundation does not provide financial assistance for students currently pursuing their A-levels, Foundation or Matriculation studies.

Q:  Do you offer sponsorship to study overseas?
A:  No, the scholarship is only for full time courses conducted in Malaysia.

Q:  How many times a year are scholarships offered?
A:  It is offered only once a year.

Q:  What happens if I miss the deadline?
A:  Late applications will not be considered.

Q: But I haven't gotten my offer letter yet? How can I apply?
A:  Application should be based on your first choice of course/field of study and institution applied to.

Q:  Can I change my programme or course midway during my studies?
A:  No, you are not allowed to change course without prior approval from Hong Leong Foundation

Q:  How often do you pay the scholarship amount?
A:  The agreed amount will be banked into the student's Hong Leong Bank account once a year.

Q:  Will I have to pay back after I graduate?
A:  No, it's a non-bonded scholarship.

Q:  Will I have to work for the Hong Leong Group after I graduate?
A:  There is no obligation to serve the Group, however you are welcome to seek employment with the Group upon graduation.

Q:  Can I apply online?
A:  No

Q:  When will I know if my application is successful?
A:  Only shortlisted candidates will be notified for an interview. If you do not hear from the Foundation by June, you may consider your application unsuccessful.

Selection Enquiry

Q:  What is the next step after I submit the application form?
A:  If you are shortlisted, you will be informed of the interview date.

Q:  Where will the interview be held? How long will it take?
A:  The interview for short-listed candidates will be held at Wisma Hong Leong, Kuala Lumpur.  It will last between 20 to 30 minutes per candidate.

Q:  How many scholarships will be offered?
A:  Between 25 to 30 awards will be granted a year.

Q. How much is the scholarship amount?

• Undergraduate studies at local universities RM  7,000/= p.a.
• Diploma/Advanced Diploma courses at local institutions RM   5,000/= p.a.
• Undergraduate studies at local private universities
(“3+0” degree programmes on full-time and on-campus basis)
Up to RM 20,000/= p.a.

Q. Do I have to apply for scholarships every year?
A. No. The amount awarded will be paid out once a year for the duration of your course.

Q. How do I check the status of my application?
A. As only shortlisted candidates will be notified, please consider your application
    unsuccessful if you do not hear from us by June.

Q. How are recipients selected and notified?
A. Candidates will be evaluated based on academic excellence, leadership qualities, financial need &
family background. Short-listed candidates will be called in for an interview.

Q. Can I take a PTPTN loan and apply for HLF scholarship at the same time?
A. No. In the event that your application is successful, you will have to give up all other
     forms of financial aid.

Q. Can I take a bank loan if the amount is still not enough?
A. No.

Q. What other benefits come with the scholarship?
A. Apart from financial assistance, the Hong Leong Foundation Scholarship Programme
    also offers opportunities for industrial training at relevant group subsidiary companies.

Q:  Can I go for further studies after I get my first degree?
A:  Yes you may, however Hong Leong Foundation does not sponsor Postgraduate studies.
