HONG LEONG FOUNDATION REACHES OUT WITH CYBERCARE
Remember
the famous song, "Imagine" by John Lennon where part of the lyrics
hoped that "the world will be as one"?
Well, this dream just took another step closer to
reality with the setting up of The Lions Club of CyberCare Kuala
Lumpur eCommunity for children's home a year ago. CyberCare is
a National Pilot programme under the National IT Council aimed
at eventually linking up and uniting the children of the world
through an electronic community system capable of transcending
geographic, language and religious barriers with the hope of nurturing
a global culture rooted in the values of caring, sharing, openness,
love and leadership. Captain Chia and Roger Tan (second & third

of The Lion Club of CyberCare.
Today,
the project was given a further boost with the signing of a sponsorship
agreement between the Hong Leong Foundation, the 308-B District
of Lions Foundation and The Lions Club of CyberCare Kuala Lumpur.
In his speech, Lion Cheung Yuk Wai, president of The Lions Club
of CyberCare Kuala Lumpur said that the CyberCare project is all
about Smart Partnerships. " The Hong Leong Foundation - CyberCare
eCorporate Care Sponsorship Programme (eCSP) in essence is a Smart
Partnership for the community. The CyberCare eCommunity comprises
children, administrators, corporations, government sector and
the community-at-large, all interacting on-line, crossing traditional
barriers of communication and learning."
A year ago CyberCare declared to link up 25 orphanages
across Malaysia by end of first quarter 2000 to form the CyberCare
electronic community. To-date they have not just done that but
had recently connected Miracle Home, the latest addition to the
CyberCare family. Looking forward, CyberCare will be expanding
its operation rapidly and this will require much more financial
resources and skilled agents. "With the support of the Hong Leong
Group Malaysia as our main corporate sponsor," said Cheong, "we
are confident of realising our dream to serve the community better."
The Hong Leong Foundation, which was represented
by its director, Roger Tan, and the Group's Regional Management
Committee chairman, K.H. Chia, voiced its support of the project.
Said Chia, "In this day and age, when dot com companies seem to
be everywhere and e-commerce seems to be the trend, the less privileged
children are in danger of being left out in our race for IT. However,
with this project, these children will have an equal opportunity
as the rest of the children to be a part of the information age."
"Furthermore, this sponsorship also offers an opportunity
for us to not only reach out to these children, but also to reach
out in a more relevant and effective manner."
CyberCare was created over a year ago to inspire
underprivileged children in homes by weaving information technology
into their lives. Since then, it has benefited many members of
the eCommunity by providing a common ground for efficient community
interaction as well as keep its members abreast of current CyberCare
events and news.
The CyberCare project team and volunteer trainers
also coach home administrators to equip them with word processing,
database management and creative IT skills while the children
are taught the necessary IT skills to create and maintain their
own Homes' homepage as well as communicate on behalf of their
homes.
"We urge individuals and other companies to emulate
their (Hong Leong Group Malaysia's) example. A great deal more
work and effort is needed to form an eCommunity that truly serves
the children and the community," said Cheong.
